Bishop Mathew Kukah of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has condemned the persistent violence against Christians in Northern Nigeria, asserting that those responsible face no legal repercussions.

Speaking at the Silver Jubilee of the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba Nigeria in Lagos, Kukah criticized the lack of accountability for attacks on Christian communities, noting that perpetrators of church burnings and killings of clergy members remain unpunished. During his address, Kukah emphasized the troubling trend where Christian persecution seems to go without justice.

He remarked, “In Northern Nigeria, Christians are among the groups you can kill without consequences. Has anyone ever been charged for burning churches or destroying Christian properties?” He also criticized the intertwining of ethnic bias with Christianity in Nigeria, stating, “Many still hold a caliphate mentality, believing that those who are not part of us must be against us.” Kukah called for a focus on the core mission of Christianity, urging believers to transcend political and ethnic boundaries.
