Bishop Matthew Hassan-Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has revealed that President Bola Tinubu did not sign the peace accord during his 2023 presidential candidacy. Speaking at the Edo Election Security Townhall, Kukah expressed concern about candidates neglecting this practice, which promotes peaceful elections.

He stressed that while the peace accord is not legally binding, it holds a moral obligation. “The National Peace Committee, what we do is not in the Electoral Act; it’s not law, it’s moral,” Kukah said, warning that skipping the accord could encourage electoral violence. He recalled that former PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar signed the peace pact a day late in 2015, and Tinubu’s omission in 2023 was similarly overlooked by the opposition.
