Pandemonium has erupted in Owerri, the Imo State capital, following a daring attack by militants on a local prison in what appeared to be an attempted jailbreak.

The situation has been described as chaotic, with reports of sporadic shooting across the city. Security agency Eons Intelligence confirmed the incident, attributing the attack to unknown gunmen. The attack was reportedly widespread, affecting areas such as Okigwe Road, Wetheral Road, and near the Government House.

Eyewitnesses suggested the shooting might be linked to the state’s attempt to deter participation in the upcoming nationwide ‘Day of Rage’ protest against hunger and misgovernance. Heavy security, including police and military reinforcements, is now in place as authorities work to restore order. An eyewitness remarked, “It seems like an orchestrated plan to deter protesters from gathering.”
