HURIWA (Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria) has strongly criticized the newly sworn-in Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun, over her controversial past and alleged lack of integrity.

The association raised concerns about her failure to declare assets as legally required, noting that “despite these serious accusations, the Code of Conduct Bureau has not pursued an investigation, leaving many to question the transparency and accountability within the judiciary.” HURIWA also highlighted the contentious 2019 Imo State gubernatorial judgment she delivered, which it claims is among the most controversial in Supreme Court history.

They further argued that “the circumstances surrounding Justice Kekere-Ekun’s elevation to CJN suggest that she enjoys significant political backing,” particularly from President Bola Tinubu, raising concerns about her independence. HURIWA believes her tenure will “perpetuate the existing culture of nepotism, corruption, and politically motivated decisions,” and warned that “without a judiciary that is independent, transparent, and committed to upholding the rule of law, Nigeria’s democracy is at risk, and the hope for justice remains an elusive dream for the common Nigerian.”
