Residents of Lagos have now joined the nationwide wave of protests against the skyrocketing cost of living in Nigeria.

Over the weekend, market women and youth took to the streets in the Ibeju-Lekki area, brandishing placards with messages like “Baba Tinubu, Nigerians are hungry” and “Tinubu, come and rescue us.” This demonstration adds Lagos to the list of states, including Kogi, Osun, Niger, and Kano, where similar protests have taken place in recent times.

The root cause of these protests lies in the steady rise in commodity prices since the removal of petrol subsidies in May 2023.
