MTN Nigeria has announced the closure of all its offices across the country today, July 30, 2024, in response to protests by customers over the recent disconnection of SIM cards not linked to the National Identification Number (NIN).

The company shared this update via its social media channels, stating: “Y’ello Customer, Please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July. We are available 24/7 to support you via our digital channels.” This action comes after widespread protests erupted, with Nigerians expressing outrage at the disconnection of their SIM cards. The policy, enforced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), mandates the linkage of phone numbers to NINs, with the latest deadline set for July 31, 2024.

In some areas, such as Festac town in Lagos State, protests turned destructive, with reports of property damage at MTN offices. Additionally, legal expert Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN) accused telecom companies of “sabotage,” alleging that these disconnections are aimed at undermining the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest. However, the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators in Nigeria (ALTON), Engr Gbenga Adebayo, refuted these claims, denying any intentional sabotage by telecom operators.
