Nigeria will commence nationwide Mpox vaccinations on October 8, 2024, following the arrival of 10,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine donated by the U.S. government.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has confirmed that the rollout will occur from October 3 to 6, allowing sufficient time for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to complete necessary regulatory checks. “Due to limited available doses (9,980) of the Jynneos Mpox vaccine, the quantities will be split evenly (1,996 doses) across the five states for implementation,” said Remi Adeleke, Head of the NPHCDA’s Public Relations Unit.

He also noted that the vaccinations will target 4,750 individuals, including close contacts of Mpox cases, healthcare workers, and immunocompromised individuals. “Two sites per state will be identified for vaccination,” he added, emphasizing that the vaccine will be administered to individuals aged 18 and above.
