The Nigerian government has summoned the British High Commissioner in Abuja following a petition submitted by Sunday Igboho, a prominent Yoruba Nation advocate, to the UK Prime Minister. This action was confirmed by Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on October 15, 2024.

During the meeting, the High Commissioner acknowledged receipt of the petition but clarified that it is part of a standard procedure for petition submissions and has not been endorsed by the UK government or its Parliamentary Petitions Committee. He reiterated the UK’s position of non-interference in Nigeria’s sovereign matters, emphasizing that past similar petitions have been rejected.

The dialogue aimed to maintain communication and address any concerns stemming from Igboho’s petition, reflecting ongoing bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK.
