In a recent statement, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu asserted that Nigeria offers the lowest electricity rates in Africa, a claim that has ignited significant backlash. During a meeting with Tosin Adeyanju, Secretary of the Lottery Trust Fund, on October 3 in Abuja, Adelabu pointed out that Nigeria’s pricing remains favorable despite global challenges.

He remarked, “Globally, we are grappling with two key issues: food security and energy security,” while stressing the country’s position in the energy sector. Critics, however, have challenged the validity of Adelabu’s claims, citing ongoing issues such as frequent power outages and high costs of alternative energy sources.

Many citizens are skeptical, questioning how low rates can coexist with widespread energy access issues. Adelabu urged citizens to be patient, stating, “With time, Nigerians will see that the government’s intentions are focused on their welfare,” indicating a commitment to improving the situation.
