The Senate in Nigeria has defended its decision to acquire luxury vehicles for lawmakers despite the country’s challenging economic conditions. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, Sunday Karimi, explained that the decision was made to ensure the vehicles are robust enough for Nigerian roads and can be used for four years. This choice of high-end luxury SUVs instead of more economical cars contradicts the revenue package set for them by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission. Senator Karimi argued that state governors and local government chairmen also purchase such vehicles for their officials, and he emphasized the poor state of roads in his constituency. Additionally, he mentioned that the National Assembly has a liability of over N16 billion, which includes outstanding debts from previous assemblies.
