On October 1, 2024, thugs took control of the protest site in Rumuokwuta, Port Harcourt, previously designated for the “FearlessInOctober” demonstration aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Armed with canes, they declared, “No protests will take place in Rivers State,” and threatened violence against journalists attempting to film them. Witnesses reported a tense atmosphere, with protesters feeling intimidated and unable to voice their concerns.

This incident coincides with nationwide protests on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, where demonstrators are urging President Bola Tinubu to reverse the removal of the petrol subsidy and unify foreign exchange rates, which they claim are fueling inflation and rising living costs.

The unrest highlights the growing frustration among citizens regarding the government’s economic policies and their impact on daily life.
