At least 20 people died when the engine of a wooden market boat exploded on the Ezetu Community river in Bayelsa State on Wednesday evening. The boat was carrying passengers and market women from Ekeni to Yenagoa when it caught fire and sank. Rescue operations are currently underway to recover the bodies of those who drowned.

Bayelsa State Police spokesperson, ASP Musa Muhammed, confirmed the incident, while Maritime Workers Union Chairman, Mr. Ipgansi Ogoniba, described how the boat’s engine caught fire and exploded mid-journey. He reported that one body was recovered by rescue teams.

Comrade Odede Dinikpete Tina, chairperson of the Association of Coastal and Waterways Communities of Nigeria in Bayelsa State, blamed the high casualty rate on the failure to enforce safety protocols, such as wearing life jackets. She urged the state government to improve road connections to coastal areas to reduce future tragedies.
