Leeds, England – May 25, 2024: Abigail Katung, originally from Zaria, Nigeria, has been inaugurated as the 130th Lord Mayor of Leeds, marking a historic milestone as the first African to hold this position.

The announcement was made during the Leeds City Council’s annual general meeting. Katung, who moved to the UK in 2000 for postgraduate studies at the University of Leeds, has served the community as a ward member since 2019.

Her tenure is celebrated as a significant achievement for Leeds’ African community, with notable figures like former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar praising her accomplishment. Katung expressed her gratitude and commitment to inclusivity in her new role.
