In a recent statement, the Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, expressed concerns over the handling of the ongoing trials of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The group’s Secretary General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, criticized the Southeast Governors for their failure to take decisive political action to secure Kanu’s release, accusing them of prioritizing political expediency over justice.
Ohanaeze highlighted the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako from the case as a positive move but lamented the governors’ silence since their pledge in July 2024 to engage with President Tinubu. Isiguzoro stated, “The lack of proactive engagement raises suspicions that Nnamdi Kanu may have been sacrificed on the altar of political expediency for the 2027 electoral cycle.”
He urged the governors to follow through on their promise, calling it both a political and moral responsibility. The statement further stressed the need for the political class to uphold integrity and deliver on their commitments to their constituents. The inaction of the Southeast Governors, according to Ohanaeze, has caused frustration and distrust among the Igbo populace.
