South African police have arrested 95 Libyan nationals suspected of receiving military training at a secret camp in Mpumalanga province, located about 360 kilometers northeast of Johannesburg.

The Libyans had reportedly entered the country on study visas under the guise of training to become security guards. However, police investigations indicated they were undergoing military training. National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe revealed on the social media site X that the site had been transformed into an illegal military training base, with the Newzroom Afrika TV news channel broadcasting images of green tents set up in a military-style camp. The arrests and closure of the camp occurred over the last two days.

Mpumalanga’s acting provincial commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, stated, “The 95 individuals taken into custody are all Libyan nationals and are currently being questioned by the relevant authorities.
