The acting mayor of South Sudan’s capital city, Juba, Emmanuel Khamis Richard, has been relieved of his duties following a public outcry over a disturbing incident caught on camera. The controversy unfolded when Richard was allegedly filmed appearing to slap a female street vendor, sparking outrage and calls for his resignation.

The incident, which occurred a week ago, gained widespread attention as the video went viral on social media platforms. Despite mounting pressure from fellow politicians and the public, Richard had adamantly refused to step down from his position.

The decision to dismiss the acting mayor comes as a response to the public’s demand for accountability and respect for the rule of law. However, the question remains: Is his dismissal a sufficient response to the alleged assault, or should he face further legal charges?

While his removal from office addresses the issue of leadership and governance, it’s essential that the legal system thoroughly investigates the incident to determine whether criminal charges are warranted. The justice system must ensure that everyone, regardless of their position, is held accountable for their actions.

The incident involving the acting mayor highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and respect for the rights of all citizens. South Sudan’s authorities must uphold these principles to maintain public trust and ensure that justice is served in this case.
