Two candidates in Iran’s upcoming presidential election, Amirhossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi and Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani, have withdrawn from the race just ahead of Friday’s vote.
Ghazizadeh Hashemi, a former vice president under the late President Ebrahim Raisi, urged others to consolidate support for a unified hard-line front. Zakani’s withdrawal aimed to prevent the formation of another administration similar to former President Hassan Rouhani’s, backing reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian instead.
This leaves four candidates in the race: hard-liners Saeed Jalili and Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, and reformists Pezeshkian and a less prominent candidate. The election follows a period of public apathy exacerbated by economic hardships, disillusionment with unfulfilled promises, and heightened tensions in the region. Despite Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s call for maximum turnout, many Iranians remain skeptical about the potential for meaningful change, as reflected in widespread public disinterest.
