Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner who recently competed in the Paris Olympics, has tragically passed away after being set on fire by a former boyfriend. The athlete, who lived and trained in northwest Kenya, succumbed to severe burns sustained during the attack on Sunday.

Authorities report that Cheptegei’s ex-boyfriend allegedly doused her in petrol and set her alight following a dispute over a piece of land. Despite efforts to save her, she died just days after the horrific assault.

Cheptegei’s death has shocked the athletics community and raised concerns about domestic violence. Kenyan authorities are continuing their investigation as tributes pour in for the talented runner, whose career had shown immense promise on the global stage.
