Heavy rainfall across Mali, Nigeria, and Niger has forced close to 950,000 people from their homes. Save the Children warned on Friday (Sept. 6) that the floods pose risks of disease, hunger due to crop loss, and disruptions to education for displaced children. At least 460 people have died across these three nations.

Nigeria has been severely impacted, with 29 of its 36 states affected. Rising water levels in the Niger and Benue rivers have worsened the situation. In Niger, flooding has hit all eight regions, particularly in the southern Maradi region. Mali’s Segou region is also struggling, with over 15,000 children affected.

Save the Children is actively responding with food security programs, cash transfers, and hygiene services across the affected regions. They urge global governments to phase out fossil fuels to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C, addressing the climate crisis at its root.
