The National Assembly is considering a bill that would allow Yoruba, Igbo, and other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria to pursue self-determination.

Promoted by Dr. Akin Fapohunda, the draft bill proposes a return to a regional system of governance, replacing the current presidential system with a parliamentary one and enabling any ethnic group to establish self-government. The bill also suggests scrapping Nigeria’s 36 states in favor of regional structures and sets a referendum for October 1, 2024, to finalize these changes.
