Betty Mbereko, a 40-year-old widow from Zambia, has married her 23-year-old son, Farai Mbereko, after becoming pregnant with his child.
The pair, claiming to be in love, chose to marry as Betty is now six months pregnant. Betty, a widow for 12 years, has been living with Farai and expressed her desire to marry him rather than her late husband’s brothers, whom she claimed were vying for her affection. The affair reportedly began three years ago. Betty cited her financial struggles to support Farai’s education as a justification for their relationship.
Despite condemnation from their village headman, Nathan Muputirwa, the couple decided to leave the village after being warned to end their marriage. Farai has expressed his willingness to pay off the outstanding bride price his father owed. The couple’s current whereabouts remain undisclosed.
