Russia has officially categorized the LGBTQ movement as terrorist and extremist organizations, with the implication of this listing remaining unclear.

The Rosfinmonitoring watchdog now has the authority to freeze the bank accounts of entities on the list, although no specific individuals or organizations have been named. This move follows the Supreme Court’s declaration of the LGBTQ movement as “extremist” in November, effectively banning LGBTQ activism throughout the country.

The Kremlin’s conservative shift, particularly evident since its involvement in Ukraine, has framed the conflict as a battle against Western ideologies. This categorization builds upon previous legislation banning “gay propaganda” among both adults and minors, effectively outlawing any public representation of non-traditional sexual relations. Recent actions, such as the pre-trial detention of two employees from a gay bar accused of organizing an extremist organization, highlight the enforcement of these measures.
