In Yobe State, an outbreak of suspected meningitis has resulted in the deaths of twenty students across three boarding girls’ secondary schools and the Federal Government Girls’ College in Potiskum and Fika local government areas.

The Yobe State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mohammed Sani-Idris, confirmed the fatalities, stating that while many were hospitalized, they have since been discharged. To mitigate the spread of the disease, key officials, including the Commissioner and representatives of the Governor, have relocated to Potiskum. Emergency treatment drugs have been provided, and rapid response teams deployed to affected areas.

Additionally, Governor Mai Mala Buni has visited impacted schools to oversee containment efforts. At the Specialist Hospital Potiskum, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health reported 214 recorded cases, with three individuals still in intensive care.
